My friend Asami loves going to live classic or musical concerts. She talked about her experience of listening to her favorite live musical concert, Les Miserables.
She said that listening to music in a concert hall and focusing on it, she feels comfortable with her body floating in the sounds. Then, she gets excited, then gets calmed down. She also experiences the music releases emotions suppressed in her daily life. When the concert finishes, she feels exhausted, but totally satisfied and happy. She wants to come back again to other concerts. It is an unforgettable occupation for her.
Asami is a woman in her late thirties, a full-time medical practitioner. She had private lessons in keyboard and piano when she was a child and she belonged to brass bands in high school. She has played several different types of musical instruments. Asami spent lots of time and energies in her youth, to develop playing skills and quality performances for contests and concerts. The practice in the brass bands was very strict and demanding and the brass band members were very competitive each other. Asami was always involved in practice and playing but it made her very tense and nervous. She thinks that she has always loved music, but she rarely enjoyed playing instruments. Asami never plays any instruments any more. Her favorite occupation is listening to live classic or musical concerts.
Once Asami arrives at the concert hall, she waits, tensely and excitedly, for the moments that the music begins. Asami is relieved when she hears the first sound. Then she listens to the music with her whole body and soul. Listening to the music, Asami feels like the concert hall is full of musical sound and her body is floating in the sound. She feels very comfortable. She feels herself unified with the sounds and gradually gets excited by them. When her excitement reaches a peak, it gradually goes down. In these moments, she gets relaxed. Going with the flow of the music, Asami enjoys the repeating waves of excitement and relaxation. She enjoys feeling waves of emotions, moving dynamic through her like a ride on a jet coaster. At other times, she doesn’t feel anything except tearful. Asami said that listening to music is not just listening, but rather, it is an experience that she makes through her own efforts with something, by focusing so intently on something.
Asami has her favorite instrumental tones and favorite singers' voices. She loves musicals but she is not interested in the story of the musical. What she gets involved in is the tones played by the instruments and the singing voices. When the concert finishes, Asami feels tense in her whole body and her shoulders and back ache. She gets exhausted. On the way back home, she feels walking unstably like a zombi in a movie but she is really satisfied and happy. Asami can’t forget the satisfaction she has with the concert. She wants to go back to musical concerts again and again. That is an important occupation for Asami.
In her daily life, she sometimes turns off the emotional switch to suppress her emotion for her work. So, she is worried that she would miss something precious while her emotional switch is off. Listening to her favorite instrumental tones and singers' voices, she is comfortable with waves of excitement and calmness and can release her suppressed emotion in her daily life. She is satisfied that she gets back to herself and gets energy for her future life.
